Navigating the Internship Process

Here is a step-by-step outline of the UT Journalism and Media internship for credit process.

Completing an internship is not required to complete your Bachelor of Journalism, but credit earned for an internship can fulfill up to 3 hours toward your professional practice/capstone requirement.

You may register for the internship class before securing an internship. Once you have been hired as an intern, you may complete the application (step 3).

Internship Course Selection

Prerequisites include completion of both J310F and J311F with a grade of B- or better.

Use the Internship Course Selection Tool to determine which course to take. Read all instructions carefully, and follow all steps provided to ensure that you complete the registration and application processes successfully.

Note: To complete this step, you do NOT have to have an internship secured.

Register for the course

  • If you register for an in-residence course, you must pay by the posted tuition deadline.
  • If you register for a summer University Extension course, you must pay for the course before you will have access to the internship application.

Note: To complete this step, you do NOT have to have an internship secured.

Note: You must be enrolled in the internship course during the semester you’re completing the internship (you may not receive credit for past internships completed).

Secure an Internship

Find an internship that meets the requirements.

Complete the online Internship Application

You MUST be registered for a Moody internship course (either in-residence or through University Extension) before you will have access to this application.

  • You must pay for the summer University Extension course and receive your email receipt before you will have access to the internship application.
  • Add the Communication Student Services email address (comm-studentservices@austin.utexas.edu) to your accepted contacts list so their emails regarding your application do not go to your spam folder.

Secure Approvals

After completing the previous steps, the course instructor will review your application and determine if it is suitable for academic credit.

Your internship supervisor will receive an email and confirm internship details.

Note: You must track the status of both of these approvals by logging back on to your submitted application; you are responsible for ensuring that these approvals are granted before the deadline and following up when needed.

Prepare

Review the Professional Conduct, Proper Attire & Sexual Harassment Guidelines and the Department of Labor Fair Standards Act criteria for unpaid internships (if applicable).

Complete the internship

After you finish the application process, you'll find the course details in Canvas that will guide you through the semester to ensure you receive credit. Check out our page of tips for success to know what to expect and how to achieve.
